What are Heatwaves?
Heatwaves are prolonged periods of excessively hot weather, often accompanied by high humidity. They can have serious health implications, especially for vulnerable populations. In April - May 2024 we are seeing lot of extreme temperatures with as high as 52.3 degrees in Delhi.
Heatwaves in India:
- India is particularly susceptible to heatwaves due to its geographical location, climate, and population density.
- Rising temperatures are linked to climate change, which exacerbates the frequency and intensity of heatwaves.
- Hot days and nights have increased significantly, and projections indicate a two to four-fold rise in heatwave occurrences by 2050.
- Average temperatures in India have already risen by about 0.7% between 1901 and 2018, partly due to climate change.
- Heatwaves can be lethal: Official figures show that more than 22,000 people died from heatstroke between 1992 and 2015, but the actual toll is likely higher.
Preventing Heatwaves
Planting more trees, rainwater harvesting, creating natural manmade lakes, wetlands and swamp areas
Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Dehydration is a common risk during heatwaves.
- Seek Shade: Avoid direct sun exposure between 12 pm and 3 pm, as this is when temperatures peak.
- Wear Appropriate Clothing: Opt for lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting, and breathable cotton clothes.
- Protect Your Eyes and Skin: Use sunglasses, an umbrella, or a hat to shield yourself from the sun.
- Limit Outdoor Activities: Avoid strenuous physical activity during extreme heat.
- Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illnesses: Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, headache, and rapid heartbeat. Seek medical help if you experience these symptomsâ”.
